According to the recent TRPA Press Release from January 25, 2017, the new Tahoe Basin Area Plan will allow for property owners to add on secondary or “mother in law” units on their existing properties, regardless of lot size. Whereas before adding additional outbuildings or expanding was limited to verified coverage limitations, this new option allows for greater housing options.
In a time where affordable housing has increasingly become a concern in the area, this amendment is a wonderful solution, and to ensure that these secondary units do not go to supplementing additional vacation rental incomes, the new units must be deed restricted as affordable housing units and cannot be used as vacation rentals.
